Comfort Farms, a veteran-led nonprofit farm in Milledgeville, launched a new perennial herb garden with support from a $5,000 grant from AgGeorgia Farm Credit’s 2024 Community Mission Fund. The project was designed to improve community health and wellness by providing access to fresh herbs traditionally and scientifically recognized for their culinary and medicinal benefits.
The garden is used to support local cuisine, create teas that address common conditions such as insomnia, hypertension, and diabetes, and encourage interest in plant-based diets. The initiative also includes compost, irrigation, weed mats, educational signage, and marketing to the broader community, ensuring that both veterans and local residents can benefit.
“Community health on the local level is trending upward, and this garden allows us to directly meet the needs of our neighbors,” said Jon Jackson, Executive Director of Comfort Farms. “It’s more than an herb garden—it’s a step toward improving quality of life for our veterans and our community.”
AgGeorgia Farm Credit awarded $53,800 in 2024 through its Community Mission Fund to twelve nonprofit organizations across Georgia. Launched in 2023, the grant program supports projects that promote the future of agriculture and enhance the quality of life in rural communities, with grants of up to $5,000 awarded per project.
