AgGeorgia Farm Credit is now accepting applications for its annual Farmers Market Grant Program, designed to strengthen local agriculture, support farmers, and expand access to locally grown food throughout rural communities. The application deadline is March 23.
Each year, AgGeorgia allocates $10,000 to the program, awarding five grants of $2,000 each to eligible farmers markets within AgGeorgia’s 79-county territory. Grant funds support projects that directly benefit agricultural producers, enhance market operations, and increase positive community impact.
“Farmers markets play a vital role in connecting producers with consumers and strengthening local food systems,” said Corey Cottle, AgGeorgia’s Chief Marketing Officer. “Through this grant program, we are proud to invest in markets that prioritize farmers and help ensure local agriculture continues to thrive.”
To be eligible, applicant markets must be located within AgGeorgia’s 79-county territory and operate for at least eight market days within a two-month period. Markets must also maintain a farmer-focused vendor mix, with at least 50 percent of vendors offering agricultural products and a minimum of five vendors selling items such as produce, meat, dairy, eggs, plants, or honey. Preference is given to markets that demonstrate a strong commitment to supporting local farmers and limit the number of craft or non-agricultural vendors.
Grant funds should be used for projects that directly support farmers or enhance market operations. Eligible uses include investments in market infrastructure such as tents, tables, signage, or refrigeration; marketing and promotional efforts that highlight local producers; farmer recruitment or retention initiatives; programs that expand food access; and educational efforts related to agriculture or local food systems. Applicants are to submit a clear and detailed plan outlining how the funds will be used and the anticipated impact.
Applications are reviewed through a scoring process that considers farmer focus, community impact, intended use of funds, long-term sustainability, and alignment with AgGeorgia Farm Credit’s mission to support agriculture and rural communities.
